These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
